Laville Elementary fifth grade team places third in the state at the CSforGood competition
LAKEVILLE, Ind. -- 200 students from across Indiana participated in what's called the CSforGood competition. This is an initiative that gives kids K-12 the opportunity to use technology to create programs and robotics that can benefit the community. While students at Laville Elementary have visited the statehouse for the past three years for this competition, this year became their best yet, placing third in the entire state.
A team of four fifth graders, two coders, and two writers created a website that aims to help teens quit vaping. Claire Weber, one of the fifth graders on the team, tells ABC57's Sidney Moore, "I don't need vapes.com and I don't need vapes.com. Is a website where each day, this is specifically towards teens, and each day you get a positive saying, and we want you to read the saying, and then if you and then you don't vape for as many days as it says. And then you would get, like, a badge."
The team had to conduct lots of local research, and work as a team to create this website. Marylynn Christy, their fifth-grade teacher, says, "They had to use a lot of different strategies to come up with their ideas and to come up with something that is beneficial to the community. It's not just the regular state standards, it's actually something that would benefit others through their hard work."
