Lack of 90-degree weather recently may end this weekend
Despite the cooler weather recently and cooler than average weather expected this work week, the heat is set to build once again next weekend.
Typically, South Bend averages eleven days with temperatures at or above 90 degrees during the summer, which is defined as June through August.
Our one outlier is the summer of 2012 when we saw twenty-nine days at or above 90 degrees and four of those days featured temperatures in the triple digits.
This was due to a prolonged period of below average precipitation and severe drought conditions, which started in May and lasted into early July.
Nine of our eleven 90 degrees days came back during our impressive June heat wave this year which featured seven days in a row at or above 90 degrees.
July never even reached 90 degrees during the entire month, which has not happened since 2017.
We surprisingly already beat last summer’s number of 90-degree days when we clocked in ten days at or above 90.
Currently, South Bend is sitting at eleven 90-degree days, but that is expected to change next weekend into the following week as the 90’s are set to return with increasing humidity.
With the rising humidity this also increases rain chances that could offer some brief relief from the heat.
The Climate Prediction Center's 6 to 10 day outlook from August 23rd through August 27th features much of the United States being warmer than normal. Confidence is high that August will end on a warm/hot note, so 90s are sure to return.
