LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A La Porte County man is facing multiple felony charges after an alleged domestic incident escalated into him reportedly dragging an officer with his car.

Cody Cappis-Woods is charged with the following:

1. Battery with Injury to a Public Safety Official (felony)
2. Resisting Law Enforcement using vehicle (felony)
3. Domestic Battery Resulting in Moderate Bodily Injury (felony)
4. Strangulation (felony)
5. Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person (misdemeanor)
6. Resisting Law Enforcement (misdemeanor) 
7. Criminal Recklessness (misdemeanor) 
8. Reckless Driving (misdemeanor) 

The alleged incident happened September 10. Officers were called to a manufactured home in La Porte at Lakeside Manor on an alleged domestic violence call. Court documents say an officer saw Cappis-Woods throw a punch at the alleged victim upon arrival. The officer allegedly drew his gun and ordered him to show his hands and get on the ground. Cappis-Woods allegedly failed to comply and began walking toward the officer.

According to documents, Cappis-Woods then turned and faced the victim, at which time the officer grabbed his wrist and pulled him away. Once outside, Cappis-Woods allegedly pulled away from the officer and attempted to reach his car.

He allegedly entered the driver's seat while continuing to resist arrest. The officer allegedly deployed his taser; documents claim only one probe made contact and had no apparent effect. 

During the struggle. Cappis-Woods allegedly slammed the door onto the officer's left elbow. Another officer reportedly arrived on the scene to assist. Court documents show Cappis-Woods allegedly started the car while the officers attempted to control him. He then reportedly turned away, which caused one officer to be pulled/dragged to the ground. That officer was taken to the hospital for multiple injuries to his left arm and elbow.

Officials allege that a vehicle pursuit ensued, involving multiple officers. According to court documents, stop sticks were successfully deployed near 250 South; however, Cappis-Woods allegedly continued driving. Officers allege he nearly crashed into a school bus on the side of the road. Cappis-Woods allegedly drove into a home's yard and ran off on foot.

One officer allegedly located hi in a fenced area. The officer reportedly drew his gun and ordered Cappis-Woods to get on the ground. According to documents, he lit a cigarette and ran off again on foot. Officials say he was eventually apprehended near Fernway Road and Meadowbrook Boulevard.

Cappis-Woods was reportedly taken to the hospital after telling jail officials he consumed several narcotics. After he was medically cleared, he was brought back to jail. Cappis-Woods allegedly admitted to using Suboxone and marijuana in the 72 hours before the incident.

He is due back in court in January 2027.
