MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- An 18-year-old is accused of Murder after 14-year-old Michigan City resident Devin Porter was shot and killed in the 300 block of W. 11th Street on May 15.

Court documents reveal Dewayne Coleman, also known by the nickname "Cantgo," is charged with one count of Murder in connection with the shooting.

Coleman was arrested on Aug. 19 after officially being charged in July.

His jury trial is set for Jan. 4, 2027.

The Michigan City Police Department responded to the shooting around 4:30 p.m. on May 15, where they were met by an 11-year-old screaming from the front porch of an apartment.

Police entered the apartment and were taken to a bedroom where they found Porter bleeding from his face and torso from apparent gunshot wounds.

Life-saving measures were performed on scene before he was taken to Franciscan Health Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The resident whose room Porter was found in told police she was inside her bedroom when she heard gunfire coming from the rear of the residence. Porter then ran into the residence from the back porch and into her bedroom where he collapsed to the ground.

The resident told police Porter didn't have problems with anybody and didn't know what the shooting could be about.

The original 911 caller then flagged an officer down and stated they saw two men walking towards the location where the shooting occurred, carrying what he believed were weapons, and having their faces partially covered.

Once the scene was secured, officers began to canvass the area for video cameras/witnesses.

Officers were able to obtain multiple videos from the surrounding area of the shooting which showed three Black men walking towards the alley where the shooting happened and then running from the area after the shooting.

Police say the subjects were caught on video without masks on and then with them on while running away.

Through the investigation, police identified the three subjects and upon interviewing two of them, police learned it was Coleman who allegedly shot Porter while they were in the alley to buy marijuana from someone.

One of the subjects told police Porter was standing near the rear gate of his residence and when Coleman saw him, asked, "Who's that?"

At that point the subject stated Porter ran towards the house and up the stairs at which point Coleman began firing multiple rounds.

The subject told investigators that's when they fled the area.
