Korean War veteran honored with memorable flight
BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. -- A U.S. Army veteran went on a plane flight of a lifetime in Michigan on Tuesday, with a special guest accompanying him by his side.
90-year-old Michiana veteran, Dick Swem, who served in the Korean War as a combat medic was able to check off a goal on his bucket list to relive an experience from 23 years ago. The goal, to take to the skies and then land the plane with his grandson Patrick beside him.
Longtime friend 22-year veteran and Aviation Instructor, Gary Blied, organized an unforgettable experience with the help of Andrews University Aviation program.
"What a blessing it is to be able to host a brother veteran like this and fill a request on his bucket list." said Blied.
Blied jumped at the opportunity of hearing Swen's bucket list dream of him flying a single engine "Piper Archer Three".
"They wanted to make a special experience for Dick and us being fellow veterans, and Kevin, you're a veteran as well. You know what that means? It's part of a special club. And when a request like that comes down, you do everything you can." added Aviation Instructor Gary Blied.
Swem's grandson, Patrick, cherished the moment with excitement to be part of this dream.
"When you're 10 years old, the oldest Grandson, this is just like an amazing experience that you never thought you were going to get. And so, they're recreating that experience for him." said Patrick, "I can't wait this time he gets to be in the pilot seat, though, and I get to be the guy that's proud to watch it."
Dick Swem was surprised by the overwhelming support from the community to recreate this experience.
"Well, it's surprising considerably the number of here watching this happen. And I thank everybody that's involved. It's fantastic, far more than I expected." said Swem.
Another surprise was planned on the ground, with Berrien Springs Fire Department setting a special salute to honor the veteran as he landed the aircraft.
"This is an amazing experience that we got to I'll cherish again for the rest of my life." stated Patrick following the flight.
