Jeremyiah Love's chances to win the Heisman trophy

NOW: Jeremyiah Love’s chances to win the Heisman trophy

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The last time Notre Dame had a Heisman candidate was in 2012, when Manti Teo, finished second in the voting.

Now, it's Jeremyiah Love that has fans and hopefully this is the year he returns the trophy back to South Bend.

To Kickoff his campaign, they enlisted the help of 1988 Notre Dame grad and award winning a author, Nicolas Sparks, to read A Love Letter.

Since 1988, five running backs, have hoisted the Heisman trophy: Ricky Williams, Ron Dayne, Reggie Bush, Mark Ingram, and Derrick Henry. Statistically Jeremyiah Love is on par with the previous five.

Bush had 1,720 yards, 16 rushing touchdowns, 477 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns, 2,197 all-purpose yards, and a total of 19 touchdowns.

Love has 1,135 rushing yards, 14 rushing touchdowns, 274 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns, a total offense of 2,197 yards, and 17 total touchdowns.

Notre Dame and Love still have Syracuse and Stanford left on the regular season schedule, which means Love isn't done making his Heisman case.

If Love is invited to New York for the Heisman presentation in December, He would be the sixth Irish player since 1987 to be in the running.

We will find out soon enough, but for the moment, Love has blossomed in South Bend and so has his Heisman campaign.

On November 18, Love was named a finalist for the Doak Walker award, which honors college football’s top running back, the fourth-oldest college football award in the nation, which honors the nation’s top college football player.
