Sophomore quarterback Cortney Davis helps Riley open season with 33-0 shutout win

SOUTH BEND, ind. -- Riley High School opened its football season with a statement Friday night, shutting out its opponent 33-0 behind a dominant rushing attack and a breakout performance from sophomore quarterback Cortney Davis.

Making his first start at quarterback, Davis rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats piled up 332 yards on the ground.

“It felt good. Amazing,” Davis said. “First time playing QB. Over the summer, we were just working, grinding, weight room, family.”

Despite his individual success, Davis was quick to credit the group in front of him.

“I want to say shoutout to my O-line,” Davis said. “They deserve that.”

Davis’ ability to make plays with his legs gives Riley another dimension offensively, but the sophomore is continuing to develop as a passer while learning how to lead a team looking to improve after a four-win season a year ago.

His goal for the Wildcats is simple.

“I’m just ready to win,” Davis said.

One victory will not define Riley’s season, but a 33-0 opening-night win gives the Wildcats plenty to build on. For Davis, the opportunity extends beyond this season. With three years of high school football ahead of him, he has a chance to develop alongside a program hoping to take another step forward.

“It’s still zero to zero,” Davis said. “Week two coming, playing Valparaiso at Valparaiso, so I’m ready for it.”

Riley will travel to Valparaiso on Friday before returning home for another test against Penn on Sept. 4.
