Irish in the MLL season recap
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – It was a successful season on the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) field for several former Notre Dame standouts. Recent Fighting Irish All-Americans David Earl (M), Kevin Ridgway (D) and Scott Rodgers (G) finished as runners-up in the league after their Hamilton Nationals squad fell to the Boston Cannons, 10-9, in Sunday’s MLL title game.
In Saturday’s 11-9 semifinal win over Denver, Earl deposited two goals, while Rodgers made 10 saves.
Earl, a rookie, tallied 17 goals and four assists in 10 games during the 2011 campaign. He also picked up 13 ground balls. The Nationals picked Earl in the third round (13th overall selection) of January’s MLL Draft. Earl garnered All-America honors with the Fighting Irish in 2010 and 2011. He was named the 2011 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year.
Rodgers had a solid second season in the pro league. He played in nine games and produced a 5-2 record. He made 106 saves and registered a.558 save percentage. Rodgers was named the 2010 NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player as he helped the Irish to a runner-up finish. He copped All-America accolades in 2009 and 2010. Rodgerswent to the Nationals in the second round (7th overall) of the 2009 MLL Draft.
Ridgway played in seven contests and picked up eight ground balls along with notching one assist during his rookie season in 2011. He was a standout defenseman with the Irish and received All-America honors as a junior and senior. The Nationals picked Ridgway in the third round (18th overall) of the 2011 draft.
Midfielder Zach Brenneman, a rookie with the Long Island Lizards, played in nine games and registered two goals and three assists in 2011. He also picked up six ground balls. Brenneman copped All-America accolades during his junior and senior campaigns at Notre Dame. Brenneman became the highest MLL pick in Fighting Irish history when he went fifth overall to the Lizards in the 2011 draft.
Former Irish goalie Joey Kemp saw action in two games this season with the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Kemp posted a 1-0 record between the pipes. Kemp played at Notre Dame from 2005-08 and was a three-time All-America honoree. The Los Angeles Riptide selected Kemp in the third round (29th overall) of the 2008 MLL Draft.
