Indiana Secretary of Education pays visit to local schools
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner made several stops in Elkhart County Tuesday, wrapping up her day at Portage School of Leaders, a charter school in South Bend.
As proposed funding changes could result in a $27 million loss in property tax funding for South Bend Schools.
During her visit, Dr. Jenner met with students and faculty, including Rima Bahraeine-Bell and David Hendelly, both juniors at Portage and recognized as St. Joseph County’s Youth of the Year. The two students shared their pride in representing their school and speaking directly with elected officials.
The amended Senate bill currently under discussion would alter how property tax revenues are distributed between traditional public schools and charter schools.
While on campus, Dr. Jenner toured the school’s award-winning robotics program and its after-school teen club operated by the Boys & Girls Club Teen Center, highlighting the importance of after school programs.
Dr. Jenner is scheduled to continue her school tour Wednesday with a visit to Success Academy.
