Hums Elementary School working to be ready by the 2027-28 school year

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Progress on the Hums Elementary School construction is ongoing with about 50% of it complete.

The new building will address issues like the open classrooms and better weather shelters.

"We're not looking to spend money in a frivolous way on the new building, but we want it to be a building that the community can be proud of and that will last and stand the test of time," said Theodore Stevens, the superintendent of School City of Mishawaka.

Stevens says community response has been positive.

"We have not had any negative sort of commentary from the community, and I think that speaks in part to the shape of the old building."

He also emphasized how important it is to make the school for the students.

"This is the school for the community and for the students of this community, not necessarily the adults and the administration."

Hums Elementary is set to be finished before the 2027 school year and possibly might get a new mascot.

Students were able to take a survey and vote to change from the Hums Road Runners to Humm Huskies.
