NOW: How temperatures across various surfaces compares to air temperature

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Michiana is looking down the barrel of potentially dangerous heat today as heat index values climb towards just under 110.

While the recorded air temperature yesterday was in the low 90s, various materials such as concrete, asphalt, and turf can reach double the air temperature during the afternoon and evening hours.

Asphalt (or more commonly known as blacktop) surfaces tend to be the most extreme material temperature-wise on hot days.

The color black has low albedo and reflects very little sunlight off its surface, meaning that asphalt can store and eventually emit heat to a much greater capacity than other materials we engage with.

Concrete, on the other hand, reflects heat much better and has a higher albedo due to its lighter color.

The coolest (and safest) material for you, pets, and children to traverse is grass.

While grass is technically darker than concrete, the energy from the sun is used in evapotranspiration and photosynthetic processes rather than increasing surface temperature.

As you head out the door, the best way to beat the heat comes down to the individual.

Staying hydrated with water and drinks containing electrolytes helps prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Wearing loose-fitting and light-colored clothes as well as a hat will keep you cool as well.

With the UV index in the "Very High" category at an eight today, make sure to lather up with sunscreen as well before heading out for the day.
