LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- Officers with the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office responded to the 200 block of Lakeview Drive in Fish Lake regarding a burglary in progress, resulting in one person being shot.

 At approximately 8:09 a.m.Sunday morning, a 66-year-old homeowner arrived at his residence and entered through an overhead garage door, where he encountered a Hispanic male carrying two rifles inside his garage. The male immediately fled the scene.

The homeowner then went inside and found a second Hispanic male within the residence. A scuffle broke out between the two, and the homeowner was shot before the intruder fled.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division were contacted and responded to the scene. Deputies set up a perimeter and searched the area extensively, but the two burglars were not located.

The homeowner suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body and was transported to a regional hospital by ground for treatment.
