Hit-and-run with buggy leaves one injured, suspect arrested
Elkhart County Jail: Edward Herr ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A man was taken to the hospital Tuesday after his horse and buggy was struck by a vehicle near Middlebury.
The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to S.R. 13 near C.R. 24 around 2:32 p.m. for a reported hit-and-run.
Authorities say a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 66-year-old Edward Herr of Elkhart, was traveling north on S.R. 13 behind a horse and buggy, also traveling north. The 42-year-old Middlebury man in the buggy told police that's when he felt an impact from behind.
The buggy then flipped on its side, causing the man to strike his head.
Herr did not remain on scene and left without providing identifying information.
The victim was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with complaints of pain in his arm, knee, and head.
Herr was located and authorities suspected him of being impaired. Herr was uninjured in the crash.
Herr was taken to the Elkhart County Jail and charged with Operating while Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of a Collision resulting in Bodily Injury.
