High School Prom party ends with gunfire: 1 dead and 2 injured
PORTER COUNTY, Ind. -- The Porter County Sheriff’s Department says a shooting in Pine Township that left one juvenile dead and two others injured remains under investigation, though investigators believe it was an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the public.
The shooting happened at a home on Liberty Avenue, where families connected to those involved are still trying to understand what led to the violence.
Dalancia Blash, a resident in LaPorte said several people inside and outside the home were caught in the chaos, including members of her own family.
“My niece was inside of the house, and my son was outside of the house,” Blash said.
Michigan City High School confirmed several of those involved in the incident are students.
Blash described her son’s account of the shooting, calling the gunfire loud and sudden.
“He told me that it was the craziest thing he had ever heard in his life,” Blash said, referring to her son.
Blash also said one of the people attending that party, helped her niece and may others hide from the attack.
“Jamir pushed and yelled and got everybody down to the ground,” Blash said. “So, he saved a lot of lives that night.”
Neighbors said the home on Liberty Ave, where the shooting occurred on Saturday night, is a rental property.
One resident showed damage to a door that was struck by a stray bullet during the shooting.
Blash said the incident has left families shaken and searching for answers.
“At this point I don’t even blame these children. I blame the parents,” she said. “These kids are not being parented.”
No suspect has been named, and the names of victims have not been publicly released at this time.
Michigan City High School says counseling and support resources will be made available to students and staff following the incident.
