Harrison Street and Oakland Avenue to close for construction
City of Elkhart ELKHART, Ind. -- The City of Elkhart announced Monday that parts of Harrison Street and Oakland Avenue will be closed for construction through November.
As of Monday, Harrison Street is closed and will be closed through November for the remainder of the construction season. According to the City of Elkhart, all businesses along Harrison Street will remain open to the public, accessible through temporary dirt crossings.
Oakland Avenue will close between Harrison Street and Lafayette Street from Monday, Mar. 16 until July. At that point, Oakland Avenue will instead be closed from Lafayette Street to Indiana Avenue through November.
The road closures are due to a federally required sewer and stormwater separation effort designed to help keep Elkhart's rivers clean. This process allegedly ensures that sewage won't overflow into Elkhart's rivers during heavy rain events
The City of Elkhart also notes that the construction timelines may be adjusted as needed due to the project's complexity.
