Group of Penn High School students hold walkout protesting ICE Friday

ABC 57

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation released a statement Friday afternoon following a group of approximately 80 Penn High School students participating in what's being called a student-led, unsanctioned walkout as part of a national protest over recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity.

The school's administration notes it was made aware of a social media post encouraging the school's 3,500 students to walk out.

Officials say their investigation was unable to determine who the student-organizers were.

Administrators discouraged students from participating and warned them of safety concerns.

School officials say although staff can't forcibly stop students from walking out, students were encouraged to return to class.

At 2 p.m., Friday, the group of students walked out, some carrying signs.

Students then circled the high school's campus, including part of Bittersweet Road, several times.

Officials say out of concern for student safety, members of the P-H-M Safety and Security Team, SRO/police officers, and Penn administration followed the students to maintain supervision.

District officials noted there was an interaction between an adult waiting in the parent pick-up line and the group of students.

The incident became a verbal exchange with no physical interaction or damage done by the students to any vehicle.

P-H-M's statement reads in part:

"While we respect students’ rights to express themselves, we also have the responsibility to uphold student safety at all times and maintain the integrity of the learning environment for all. Student expression must be done in a manner that is not disruptive to other students.

Our focus remains on student safety while reinforcing expectations for appropriate conduct during the school day. We will address any student misbehavior and disruptions to the school day in accordance with the Student Handbook. Penn High School will continue to ensure a safe, orderly environment where learning can continue for all students."
