Gov. Braun activates Indiana National Guard to aid storm recovery efforts

ABC 57

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Indiana Governor Mike Braun announced he has activated the Indiana National Guard to aid in storm recovery efforts after severe weather impacted at least 41 counties across the state.

State officials say damage assessments and recovery efforts remain ongoing.

“Hoosier Guardsmen always answer the call to serve our state and our nation,” said Braun. “In times like these, I’m immensely grateful for the soldiers who are on the ground ensuring Hoosier safety.”

Officials say Hoosier Guardsmen from units in Jasper, Vincennes, and Seymour will assist with what the governor calls "Operation Sandcastle."

State officials say units in Bedford, Terre Haute, Indianapolis, and Chandler remain ready if called upon.

The Indiana Governor's Office is also working with Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Indiana Department of Transportation, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and Indiana Department of Corrections to start sand bagging operations for flood prevention of critical infrastructure and civilian property.
