Gas drops 17 cents across the bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Average gasoline prices have been a major concern over the last year but this week there was a 17 cent drop in gas prices across the South Bend area.

According to GasBuddy.com, Unleaded gas in the area is starting at $2.73 a gallon which is a thirty cent drop from a month ago, and 54.8 cent drop from a year ago.

ABC 57 Reporter, Arriell Drayton went to local gas station Citgo to speak with driver, Jim Graham to see how he felt about the recent price drop.

“I like that it went down twenty cents, but I do think they can go down a little bit more. It’s nice to see it go down but there is a lot of discrepancy throughout the city rather than how much it is in each area.” said Jim Graham

The GasBuddy survey analyzed over 210 gas stations within the South Bend area and gas is averaging at $3.00 per gallon and the lowest being at $2.73 cents.

Gas prices are constantly changing so here is a list of neighboring areas and their current gas prices:

  • Fort Wayne, IN- $3.05/g, down, 22.2 cents per gallon from last week
  • Gary, IN - $3.14/g, down, 22.9 cents per gallon from last week
  • Kalamazoo, IN- $3.13/g, up 9.3 cents per gallon from last week

The decrease in gas was not only for the unleaded gas but also diesel prices are currently standing at $3.57 per gallon, this is the lowest it has been in the past two years.

Truck owner operators like Marcus Northern say his expenses are continuously impacted by the price constantly changing making it hard to run his business.

“Gas prices are high for me because every day I have to put fuel in this dump truck because it costs a hundred fifty, two hundred dollars a day.”

National gas prices for diesel gas have declined 3.4 cents within the past week and is at the lowest that it has been in the past two years.
