Iranian cybercrime group claims to have hacked St. Joseph County’s digital infrastructure

ABC 57

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- An Iranian cybercrime group that hacked into FBI Director Kash Patel’s email account now claims to have breached St. Joseph County’s IT infrastructure.

The group, known as Handala Hack, claims to have accessed thousands of official county documents. Images reviewed by ABC57 appear to show detailed and unredacted police case, medical, and social security information.

In an emailed statement to his colleagues obtained by ABC57, St. Joseph County Common Council member Bryan Tanner said that the group’s claims of accessing the entirety of the county’s digital systems are “grossly exaggerated.” He says that the county’s IT department identified that legitimate documents were obtained from a third-party fax server, not the county’s main digital infrastructure.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department is not currently investigating this case. The sheriff's department also confirmed they received an IT alert stating there was a breach related to the county's third-party fax system.
