Fire breaks out at vacant JCPenney, fire deemed suspicious

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Michigan City Fire Department reports crews responded to a fire on Friday, Oct. 10, at the vacant JCPenney in Marquette Mall.

Firefighters arrived and were informed by security personnel of visible smoke and fire inside the store.

Crews found the source of the fire to be in a storage room. The fire was quickly extinguished.

Fire officials consider this fire suspicious in nature since there's no active electrical service in the area.

The official cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.

Operating businesses within the mall were temporarily evacuated due to smoke spreading throughout the complex.

No injuries were reported.
