FEMA invites Berrien County residents to review current flood maps
BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- FEMA announced preliminary flood risk information and updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps are now available for review by residents and business owners in Berrien County.
FEMA officials say property owners are encouraged to review the latest information to learn about local flood risks and possible future flood insurance requirements.
Community members with concerns or questions about the map may participate in the 90-day appeal and comment period, which began June 6.
You can view the preliminary maps and changes from current maps online at the FEMA Flood Map Changes Viewer.
The updated maps were made in coordination with local, state, and FEMA officials.
Before the maps become final, community stakeholders should identify any concerns or questions about the info and submit any appeals or comments.
You can contact your local floodplain administrator to do so.
Officials say appeals must include technical information, like hydraulic or hydrologic data, to support the claim. Appeals can't be based on the effects of proposed projects or projects started after the study is in progress.
The next step in the mapping process is the resolution of all comments and appeals, officials said.
After those are resolved, FEMA will notify communities of the effective date of the final maps.
