NOW: Family of Michigan City homicide victim remembers his legacy of music and compassion

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Family and friends are remembering Eddie Nixon as a man whose love for music and community touched many lives.

Nixon, who was set to celebrate his 68th birthday this week, was stabbed to death along with his fiancée, 66-year-old Sylvia White, during the early morning hours of Oct. 19. Police arrested a juvenile suspect — believed to be White’s foster child — but Nixon’s family says they have yet to receive updates from investigators or see official charges filed.

“It’s a feeling that we just really can’t describe, because it’s unbelievable,” said Nixon’s niece, Pastor Felicia Blakely of High Praise Ministries. “We wake up every day like, is this really happening? Are we really sitting here planning a funeral for our Uncle Eddie?”

Blakely described her uncle as a pillar of the community. A man who loved cooking for others, making people laugh, and playing guitar.

“This is not just impacting our immediate family,” Blakely said. “This is impacting our community. He loved music — that was his life and his passion.”

Nixon was known for his humor and generosity. Blakely recalled voicemails from her uncle letting her know when he was cooking.

“He’d say, ‘Hey niece, I cooked — but don’t call me, I’ll call you when it’s done,’” she said. “He just loved to cook, loved to serve, and had a big heart of compassion.”

As the family prepares for his funeral, they’re holding on to hope for justice.

“Once we’re through this process, we’re demanding answers.” Blakely said, “It’s painful, but his legacy will live on.”
