Fall weather means more people burning leaves

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Firefighters with Clay Township say that they see more people burning leaves this time of year.

And they are encouraging people to be mindful of their neighbors.

Firefighters also say there is a specific way people should burn leaves.

"They need to be in a container with a screen over the top so the ashes don't blow out," Dave Cherrone, Clay Fire Marshall, said.

Firefighters also say if you can a breeze, do not start a fire.

In St. Joseph County, all leaf burning must be done by dusk.
