EPD traffic stop leads to overnight pursuit, suspect bit by K9 during apprehension

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department reports an officer conducted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Trailblazer for speeding around 12:25 a.m., Tuesday in the parking lot of Handy Spot Liquor at 105 W. Hively Ave.

During the stop, the officer noticed signs of possible impairment and asked for driver’s ID.

The driver ignored the officer's commands before driving away south on Prairie Street at a high rate of speed.

A pursuit ensued, with the Trailblazer heading west on C.R. 20.

During the pursuit, police say the suspect vehicle disregarded several red lights while continuing to speed. The suspect vehicle then turned north onto Ash Road, before turning west along the tracks, at which point the officer lost sight of the vehicle.

Officers later located the unoccupied vehicle by the side of the tracks east of Apple Road in Osceola.

Police say the Trailblazer had flipped onto its roof and was heavily damaged.

The report then states officers with the EPD, Elkhart County Sheriff's Office, St. Joseph County Police Department, and a Mishawaka Police Department K9 officer attempted to locate the male driver and the female passenger.

At around 1:05 a.m. officers found the driver in a shed at in the 200 block of Goshen Road.

While being apprehended, the driver was bit by the K9. He was detained and taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

While at the hospital, officers filed for and executed a blood draw search warrant for the suspect.

Officers later located the female passenger, walking and apparently unharmed.

The male suspect remains at the hospital under police custody.
