ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. — During a season when many families are struggling behind the scenes, one Elkhart woman is stepping up to help ease the burden for local students and their families.

April Ordonez has launched a GoFundMe to pay off outstanding student lunch debt for families at Concord Community Schools after a drive past her former elementary school sparked the idea.

Ordonez approached Concord West Side Elementary School Principal Jessica Brock during parent-teacher conferences and offered to cover the school’s unpaid lunch balances.

What began as a quiet act of kindness quickly revealed a larger need.

With many families reliant on the slowing local RV industry, student lunch debt has become a growing challenge across the community.

“I wish I could do more, I can’t do it by myself, and bringing the community together is a good idea,” Ordonez said.

Ordonez set a $900 goal on GoFundMe, but the balance goes beyond that.

A mother herself, she says she understands the stress families face during the holidays and hopes the effort provides relief where she can.

“I remember the feelings of scarcity, being late on rent, and I don’t want other people to feel that way,” she said.

“Although this is quite a blessing to us, we’re not surprised that our neighbors want to help our children,” Brock said.

She encourages others to find one small way to give back this holiday season, because sometimes the most meaningful gifts often aren’t found under the tree.

“What an incredible gift,” Brock said.
