Elkhart man arrested for murder, attempted murder after two men found shot
ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department has a man in custody after one man was found dead and another was found with apparent gunshot wounds in the 700 block of C.R. 3 in Elkhart early Sunday morning.
After getting a report of gunshots, police arrived on scene and located a person, identified as 33-year-old Elkhart man Romulo Reyes, near the front of the property with an apparent gunshot wound.
"Despite officers’ efforts to render aid, Reyes succumbed to his injuries at the scene," authorities said. "A second victim, identified as 38-year-old Carlos Martinez of South Bend, was found at the rear of the property also with gunshot wounds."
Martinez was immediately taken to Elkhart General Hospital with life threatening injuries and the Elkhart County Homicide Unit was contacted and took over the investigation.
Reyes' death was ruled a homicide, and, during the investigation, 24-year-old Joshua Peter Martinez of Plymouth was identified as a suspect in both shootings.
On Nov. 7, Joshua Martinez was arrested in Wakarusa for the crimes of murder and attempted murder.
"Formal charges are expected to be filed early next week," authorities said. "He will have an initial hearing in the Elkhart Circuit Court on Nov. 14 and will be held without bond until that time."
The investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information can contact the Elkhart County Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825 or 574-296-1888
