Michigan City man arrested after standoff

ABC 57

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Michigan City Police Department reports a man was arrested on April 12 after a lengthy standoff.

According to police "at approximately 9:03 p.m., Uniform Patrol Shift II Officers Antonio Carire and Steve Wiegel were dispatched to room #126 of the Baymont Motel in reference to a report of children possibly being battered by a male in the room."

Upon arrival police found the mother of the children inside the motel and 27-year-old Nathaniel Gruntzel sitting outside in a vehicle. The mother explained they had gotten into an argument over the realization that Gruntzel was currently wanted in the State of Wisconsin for the sexual assault of a minor.

The arrest warrant for Gruntzel was confirmed through the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

Police located Gruntzel outside where he exited the vehicle and started running toward a nearby Meijer store. A chase ensued during which Gruntzel dropped a handgun which he quickly reclaimed.

According to the report "The Officers were able to contain Mr. Gruntzel within the Garden Center. Mr. Gruntzel then placed the barrel of the handgun on his head and threatened suicide."

The report goes on to state that "The store was evacuated and Michigan City Police Department Crisis Negotiator, Lt. Jeff Ramion, was summoned to the scene. Lt. Ramion spoke with Mr. Gruntzel for over six hours trying to de-escalate the situation and get Mr. Gruntzel to put the gun down and surrender. Despite incredible efforts, Mr. Gruntzel made the decision to shoot himself in the upper torso."

Gruntzel was quickly taken into custody and transported to Franciscan Health Emergency Room for treatment and then moved to a hospital in South Bend for advanced care.

Nathaniel Gruntzel will remain under supervision in the hospital before being transported to the La Porte County Jail.

He will be faced with charges of Resisting Law Enforcement, Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm and Disorderly Conduct as well as the additional charges by Milwaukee County.
