ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart City Council voted 8-1 at Mon. evening’s board meeting, establishing a rental inspection program for the Hart City. The program requires landlords to annually register their rental properties and requires all units to be inspected every three years.
The city said it’s in an effort to ensure all Elkhart properties are safe and habitual for residents, but not everyone is on board with the program.
Now that the program is underway, property owners must have their registrations completed by July 1st, 2026. The city said up until then, they will be working to make sure every landlord is informed of the program.
