Details of recent car theft and robbery at Notre Dame Federal Credit Union

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The details of the July 3 car theft and robbery at the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union have been released via the official court affidavit.

Documents state on July 3 around 9:30 a.m., officers responded to the Gates Toyota Dealership on W Ireland Road in South Bend.

A sales associate told an officer a man came in stating he wanted purchase a car.

Documents state the man then presented the sales associate a driver's license bearing the name David Hatmaker.

After checking Hatmaker's credit, the associate told him he wasn't eligible to purchase a car.

The associate told police Hatmaker then sat on a bench outside near a 2023 blue Toyota Camry with the keys in it, parked nearby to be moved by employees.

Another employee told police he saw Hatmaker stand up and get into the Camry, sit in it for 10 minutes, and then drive away.

Later around 4 p.m., officers responded to a robbery alarm at the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union located on N Portage Road in South Bend.

Officers were informed the suspect was described as a white man, tall, thin, with dirty blonde hair wearing sunglasses, a yellow construction shirt, and a blue hat.

Officers arrived on scene and spoke with a witness who stated the suspect presented her with a note written on a bank envelope.

The note directed her to give the suspect "mostly everything" in her teller drawer.

Documents state the note also warned the witness against telling her coworkers and the suspect had others waiting outside.

The witness complied and put a GPS tracking device into the bag along with the money.

The witness also told police as she was getting money out of her drawer, the suspect showed her a form of identification.

She believed the ID might have said David Hatmaker.

Another witness who had been behind the suspect in line, observed the suspect was "covered" in tattoos.

The second witness stated the suspect walked up to the front and handed the clerk the note without saying a word.

When the suspect left, that same witness saw him walking towards the Meijer on Portage Avenue.

Authorities say bank surveillance showed the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Hatmaker, had been observed driving a blue Camry with dealer paperwork and stickers in the window.

Documents state the GPS device was activated and tracked to a parking lot off Bendix Avenue where Hatmaker was taken into custody.

He was searched and officers located a large amount of cash, still bearing bank bands, and a quantity of a substance which field tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine, and a syringe.

Hatmaker was then arrested.

Hatmaker is charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, a level six felony, Invasion of Privacy, a class A misdemeanor, Residential Entry, a level six felony, Domestic Battery, a class A misdemeanor, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a level four felony, and Robbery, a class C felony.

The State of Indiana requested the court to detain the Hatmaker until a bail hearing in open court, for reasons including him being a substantial danger to self, others, or the community, and being a substantial flight risk.
