Cool and damp midweek
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame football opened training camp Thursday under head coach Marcus Freeman, aiming to rebound from last season’s national championship loss to Ohio State.
With the season opener against Miami on Aug. 31, the team is focused on both sides of the ball, especially defense.
Despite losing key players like Xavier Watts, Jack Kiser, and Benjamin Morrison, the defense showed promise on day one.
Redshirt freshman safety Tae Johnson stood out with two interceptions on back-to-back throws from CJ Carr, who’s battling Kenny Minchey for the starting quarterback job. Freeman praised Johnson’s consistency since spring and his athletic upside.
Transfer cornerback DeVonta Smith, who had 30 tackles and a forced fumble in 2024 at Alabama, also drew attention.
Camp continues Friday with ABC57 providing full coverage.
