Crews respond to two-story house fire on Cedar Street in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Fire Department reports crews responded to a possible structure fire at 1118 Cedar St. on Wednesday at around 1:23 p.m. after receiving multiple calls.
Units arrived on scene to find a two-story, possibly multi-family, home with heavy brown and gray smoke venting from several windows, eves, chimneys, and the front door.
The report states suppression lines were deployed quickly with entry made through the front door.
When entering the home, firefighters found heavy flames and fire damage to the floor, which stopped them from advancing their attack on the fire.
The report states crews backed out, repositioned, and continued their efforts.
A search of the home found no victims and later reports confirmed that the residents weren't home.
Fire officials say suppression efforts continued but extinguishment proved difficult since the fire spread into void spaces.
The fire was extinguished in about an hour and a half.
The American Red Cross was notified and assisted the two displaced families.
No civilian or firefighter injuries have been reported at this time.
The fire remains under investigation.
