UPDATE THREE: The Niles Fire Department has released the conditions of the survivors from the house fire on N. 7th Street.

Fire officials say the homeowner's brother was rescued from a second-story bedroom and was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment of any injuries or smoke inhalation.

The homeowner's wife and son escaped through the rear door before fire crews arrived. Both were evaluated for smoke inhalation before being taken to Corewell Niles.

The homeowner's mother was found dead on the second floor.

Fire officials say the preliminary investigation determined the fire began on a front porch couch with witness testimony stating it was caused by smoking.

Arson investigators, detectives, and the fire marshal are still investigating the scene and all testimony and evidence.

UPDATE TWO: The call came in at 2:53 p.m., where Niles Township Fire assisted Niles City Fire in rescuing a person trapped on the second story by way of a window.

Three cats were also rescued from the first floor.

UPDATE: Niles Mayor Nick Shelton reported via social media that a 68-year-old resident is dead as a result of the house fire on N. 7th Street.

Shelton stated three other people were able to escape.
