Fur Ball raises funds for shelter pets

NOW: Fur Ball raises funds for shelter pets

LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The Michiana Humane Society held its third annual Fur Ball.

The fundraiser brought music, food, and all types of activities with a combined disco and country-western theme.

Heidi Tuthill, the development director, said the event raises about 15% of the Shelter's annual operating budget, "specifically from donations, we're hoping to raise $40,000. Overall, for the whole event between ticket sales, sponsorships, our raffle, I would say about $160,000 is our goal."

This year's Fund-a-Paws appeal would pay for a dental X-ray machine.

Executive Director Johanna Humbert said the shelter has spent about $8,000 so far this year sending animals to outside vets to have their teeth examined.

"So many of the animals that arrive at the shelter have really bad dental disease, and they need X-rays to be able to tell what's going on below the gum line."

Tuthill said there is a need for help, "Michigan City and the surrounding areas, they really do need a lot of help with homeless pets and overpopulation. It's hard for us to keep up, and we don't receive any government funding."
