Crash leaves a LaPorte County high school student dead

LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. - LaPorte County Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of US 6 and CR 425 West in reference to a crash early Thursday morning.

Deputies were advised that a semi-truck and pickup truck were involved.

Authorities say the initial on-scene investigation determined the semi being driven by 70-year-old Donald E. Miles, of Hobart, had been traveling east on US 6 when upon approaching CR 425 West, the semi slowed and prepared to turn left onto CR 425 West.

The semi began turning and, in doing so, failed to yield to a pickup truck traveling west on US 6.

The pickup truck, driven by 16-year-old Mark A. Steuer, of La Porte, crashed into the trailer being pulled by the semi.

Steuer was transported to an area hospital.  While still investigating the crash scene, deputies learned Steuer was pronounced deceased in the emergency room.

Miles was uninjured during the crash.

Toxicology test results are pending.  The crash investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released.

Thursday, the South Central School District wrote in a letter to parents saying in part, "Our students and school community are saddened by this loss and struggling to comprehend. We are working to support our students, staff, and that family in any way we possibly can."

The family of Mark Steuer has set up a GoFundMe to help pay for funeral expenses. You can donate here.
