Countdown to Kindergarten program launches across Elkhart County

Countdown to Kindergarten Elkhart County

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Community Foundation of Elkhart County, through the Building Strong Brains Coalition, is launching Countdown to Kindergarten for families across Elkhart County.

Countdown to Kindergarten was created in response to local readiness data showing that of the approximately 2,800 children entering kindergarten each year in Elkhart County, nearly 1,200 are not meeting readiness benchmarks.

Community leaders identified the need for an accessible, large-scale solution that removes financial barriers while helping children build the skills needed to succeed in school.

The program will be built and administered by Head Start, utilizing experienced early childhood educators and proven curriculum.

Programming will take place at participating school locations across Elkhart County, allowing families to access services close to home.

The eight-week program begins Tuesday, May 26, and will be offered at no cost to families.

There are no income requirements or means testing.

The core program will operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with extended care available through a partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Elkhart County.

Meals will be provided during the program day, and transportation will be arranged where needed to help ensure participation.

Participating sites include locations within Baugo, Concord, Elkhart, Goshen, and Middlebury Community School districts.

The program is designed to help children prepare academically, socially, and emotionally by building classroom routines, early literacy and math skills, and confidence before the school year begins.

Families with children entering kindergarten in Fall 2026 are eligible to apply.

Registration opens Tuesday, Feb. 17, here
