Coolspring Township man charged with murder

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. - The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office say they located a male subject, identified as 25-year-old Travis S. Clemons of Michigan City, lying motionless at a residence in the 8600 West block of CR 400 North.

Deputies were dispatched around 8:37 p.m., Thursday, to a residence in reference to a battery. While responding, deputies were advised a subject had possibly been struck by a vehicle.

Captain Andy Hynek was the first to arrive on scene when he located Clemons lying motionless near a vehicle.

While rendering aid to Clemons, they discovered a gunshot wound to his torso, at which point he was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Authorities say a subject standing nearby, identified as 22-year-old Dawson W. Mahoney, was detained and later transported to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives worked on the investigation throughout the evening and into the morning hours on Friday.

At approximately 3:10 a.m., Clemons died due to injuries sustained during the incident.

Probable cause was granted and found for the arrest of Mahoney for murder.

Mahoney remains in the La Porte County Jail and is being held on a $1,000,000.00 cash-only bond.
