Combine sewer overflow in Niles after Tuesday storms

NILES, Mich. -- The Niles Utilities Department reports on Tuesday, June 25, there was a combined sewer overflow (CSO) into the St. Joseph River of an unknown amount of diluted wastewater from the Grant Street siphon north of the Broadway Street Bridge.

The Niles Utilities Department defines a CSO as a discharge from a combined sewer system which is a mixture of domestic wastewater and excessive rainwater in the same pipe.

They add a CSO can occur during heavy rainfall events when the amount of wastewater and rain exceed the system's capacity.
