Chicago Bears sign former Notre Dame Tight End Smythe

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- NFL Network's Ian Rapoport sent out a tweet on Thursday morning indicating former Notre Dame and Miami Dolphins Tight End Durham Smythe has signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears.
Smythe was drafted by the Dolphins out of Notre Dame in 2018 and played the first seven seasons of his career before becoming a free agent this offseason.
In his NFL career, Smythe has 132 catches for 1,228 yards and three touchdowns.
The move makes Smythe the second former Fighting Irish TE on the Bears behind starter Cole Kmet who Chicago drafted in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2020 NFL draft.
During his five seasons with the Bears, Kmet has caught 258 passes for 2,592 yards and 19 touchdowns.
The move also reunited Smythe with Chicago Head Coach Ben Johnson, who overlapped with Smythe during his own seven-year tenure as an offensive coach in Miami.
