Charges filed in murder of Christopher Yakim on S. Michigan Street
A man has been charged in the murder of Christopher Yakim on Wednesday, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office.
Jerrod Sanders has been charged with murder and a firearm sentencing enhancement.
On Wednesday, South Bend Police responded to the 2000 block of S. Michigan Street and spoke with a woman who said her boyfriend had been shot.
Police then located Yakim lying just inside an apartment, unresponsive, but breathing.
Police noticed three holes in the front door that appeared to be bullet holes. They also found 3 spent shell casings outside the home, just west of the steps to the main entry.
The woman told police an hour before the shooting, she and Yakim got into a fight at a gas station and she called Jerrod Sanders for a ride. Sanders drove her back to the Michigan Street residence where she lived with Yakim.
When they arrived, Sanders pulled out a gun and was holding it in hand when he got out of his vehicle and confronted Yakim, according to the probable cause affidavit.
At the time Yakim was on the front porch of the home.
Yakim and Sanders argued and Yakim turned to walk inside, the witness told police. Sanders told Yakim not to turn his back on him, reports said.
Yakim walked into the house and closed the door.
Sanders allegedly fired three shots at the door where Yakim just entered the house, reports said.
Sanders was taken into custody in Berrien County, Michigan and is being held pending extradition to Indiana.
