ELKHART, Ind. -- A fire truck push in ceremony occurred in the City of Elkhart today.

Celebrating a public safety investment in honoring a long-standing fire service ritual, dating back to the days of horse drawn fire equipment.

The tradition that welcomes a new apparatus into service started when fire fighters literally had to push their equipment back into the bay after returning from a call.

Today's event celebrated more than just the new truck, but the continued dedication to keeping the city with a heart safe.

"Getting the community involved is a big part of it. We want them to see what their tax dollars are purchasing. We try to keep a fire engine about 15 years, so we were a little bit behind on the other one, the city council was gracious enough to approve a purchase of two fire engines last year," stated Fire Chief Rodney Dale.

Today's event was open to the entire community, with food, family, and friendly games.

To top off the celebratory occasion, a special guest appearance by Sadie, Elkhart's beloved fire station dog.
