BHDPS responds to early morning incident on Pipestone Road

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety released a statement regarding officers working to clear a mobile nuisance party at Phillips 66 on Pipestone Road in Benton Charter Township.
While working to clear the scene, officers were notified of a man they were looking for from a previous complaint of having a weapon, who was seated in a car on Pipestone Road.
Two officers in marked cars arrived on scene with flashing lights, and when going to approach the man, he fled on foot.
Upon pursuing, one officer attempted to use a taser to stop the man, with only one prob connecting, making it ineffective.
The man went through the crowd back onto Pipestone, when he ran towards a parked vehicle and tried to open the door.
The driver of the vehicle attempted to flee, swerving towards the officers, with the man holding onto the window.
While driving at a high rate of speed, the vehicle began to drive right at one of the officers, which resulted in that officer using his service pistol in self-defense.
The vehicle was eventually stopped on Pipestone near Ravine, with the man holding onto the window being taken into custody.
No one involved in this incident sustained any injuries.
The man was then transported to Berrien County Jail.
Michigan State Police have been requested by the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety to investigate the officer involved shooting.
The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety would like to emphasize that no one has been injured from this incident.
This is an active and ongoing situation.
We will update as we confirm more.
