Berrien Community Foundation and local family launch summer arts scholarship

BERRIEN COUNTY, Ind. -- The Berrien Community Foundation announced the launch of the Wood Family Summer Arts Scholarship, an opportunity for Berrien County students who are passionate about the arts.
Applications are now open and the deadline for applications is March 15.
Foundation officials say there will be two scholarships up to $1,500 each.
They will be awarded to help students attend summer camps, intensives, or programs that explore an artistic discipline at places like Interlochen, Drum Corps International, Western Michigan University’s Seminar, or other similar programs.
Officials say one scholarship will be awarded to a student attending high school in Berrien County, while the other will give preference to a student from Lakeshore High School.
“Our family’s participation in music goes back several generations to my grandpa Archie, who entertained Great Lakes cruise ship passengers in the 1930s,” said Doug Wood. “My wife Jill and I believe that arts education is critical to educational, social and personal growth and, with a little luck, builds a skill that can bring lifelong joy to a student.”
Officials say that artistic disciplines that will be considered include instrumental and vocal music, dance, visual arts such as painting, sculpting and photography, and theater arts such as acting, directing, and costume design.
“The Wood Family’s generous support ensures that young artists in our community have access to enriching summer programs that help them grow creatively,” said Lisa Cripps-Downey, BCF president. “This scholarship is an exciting new opportunity to encourage students to pursue their artistic passions.”
