Annual U.S. 12 garage sale begins Friday in Michigan

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- Friday marks the beginning of the annual U.S 12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale that spans the 180+ miles of U.S. 12, from New Buffalo in Berrien County east to Wayne County and the City of Detroit.

"If you love shopping and searching for hidden treasures, this journey is for you," organizers said. "The U.S. 12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale is aptly called, Michigan’s Longest Garage Sale."

The annual event encourages those who live or own businesses along U.S. 12 to clean out their attics and garages and set up shop on their properties.

"You will find everything from antiques, collectibles, furniture, dishware, fresh garden produce, homemade jams and jellies, live entertainment and much more," organizers said. "Perhaps even more interesting than the treasures are the people you will meet along the way."

The sales can be found along the highway at homes, farms, businesses, parking lots, churches and fields.

Some areas will have large numbers of vendors in a concentrated stretch of highway, while others may be scattered. Drivers and shoppers are reminded to remain aware and observant while passing through areas where people might be attempting to cross the road in unconventional areas.

"As you drive the country roads on your quest, you will be privy to incredible stories related to the individuals and the items they sell and see a plethora of items that only your grandmother could love," organizers said. "Most importantly most come to see the unusual and socialize. It is Americana at its best."
