Ambulance collides with school bus, bus crashes into second bus
BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Berrien County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to a multi-vehicle crash around 1:30 p.m., Wednesday at M-139 and E. Empire Avenue in Benton Harbor.
Investigators say they learned that a Medic 1 ambulance was traveling north on M-139, responding to a cardiac arrest priority call with its lights and siren on.
The ambulance was approaching the intersection of E. Empire Avenue when witnesses told authorities the light had just turned red for the north and southbound lanes.
The report states a Berrien RESA school bus was stopped for the red light for the eastbound lane of E. Empire.
When the stoplight turned green for the bus, it proceeded to cross M-139, pulling into the path of the ambulance.
Deputies say the ambulance collided with the bus, pushing it into the path of a First Student bus heading west.
The buses struck each other head-on according to the report.
The First Student bus driver and bus driver assistants received minor injuries while the Berrien RESA bus driver was uninjured.
The RESA bus driver's assistant received minor injuries and the four students on the buses were uninjured.
The paramedics suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Corewell Health for treatment of internal and lower extremity injuries.
The Berrien County Sheriffs Crash Investigation unit responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.
The crash remains under investigation and authorities don't believe drugs or alcohol to be factors in the crash.
