Two-year-old dead in SWAT standoff in Elkhart

UPDATE (7:49 p.m.): At approximately 3:30 p.m. the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team entered the home and apprehended the suspect, 37-year-old Ryan Snyder.

Upon entering the home, a two-year-old male child was found deceased and a four-year-old female child was located and treated at the scene.

Synder was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated and is now incarcerated at the Elkhart County Jail.

UPDATE (5 p.m.): ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Active SWAT situation on Pendleton Drive in Elkhart has concluded, with the suspect being taken into custody. 

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit and the Indiana State Police are currently actively investigating this situation due to the death of a minor child.

We will update as we learn more. 

ORIGINAL: ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. --The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office responded to the 57000 block of Pendleton Dr. on Jul. 6, around 9:06 p.m., to a report indicating an adult male threatened to harm two children. 

Information was received and indicated that the adult male threatened to harm the children; deputies tried to make contact with the adult male at the residence but were unsuccessful. 

Investigation has so far confirmed the male was in the residence, armed and threatened to harm law enforcement. 

The Elkhart County Regional SWAT team responded around 12:09 p.m. on Jul. 7, to assist in securing the scene, and attempt to contact the adult male. 

That male refused to exit, and he discharged his firearm before barricading himself in the residence. 

The Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team has also been requested to assist. 

This scene and the surrounding area remain secure, as law enforcement continues to attempt a peaceful resolution. 

The public is asked to please stay clear of the area for their safety, and the safety of the first responders.
