SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Community members took part in the September 11 Memorial Walk in South Bend on Thursday, with many marching through the streets carrying American flags for 21 miles.
Bob Lyons, founder and organizer of the September 11 Memorial March, said the 21-mile distance represents the walking 21-gun salute in honor of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
The march started at 9:11 a.m. and ended at around 6:45 p.m., with the final stop being at St. Patrick's County Park 9/11 Memorial.
Lyons stated, "I am from St Louis, and I was in the New York City area when 9/11 happened. And in St Louis there's a walk called March to the Arch, and it's the same format, same concept, and we had to move. And so, we moved here. I brought that with me, because it meant so much to me, and I will never work another 9/11 in my life. This is just kind of part of who I am. And so, wherever I go, I kind of bring it with me."
