22-year-old suspect charged with Auto Theft, stolen vehicle recovered

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office announced on Tuesday that they've charged a 22-year-old suspect with Auto Theft and other charges after the Elkhart Police Department arrested him and recovered the stolen vehicle on Jan. 10.

The police report states on Jan. 10, at around 5:52 a.m., an EPD officer took a stolen vehicle report.

The victim told authorities that an unknown person stole her Chevy Trailblazer earlier that morning while it was left parked and running at 3312 C Ln.

Later that day, authorities say at around 4:07 p.m., another EPD officer received an alert for a stolen vehicle in his area.

The report states the officer then located the parked vehicle at the Hoosier Spot gas station at 245 W. Hively Ave.

While on scene, police say a man exited the store and got in the driver’s seat of the Chevy.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Dayaavon Johnson of Elkhart, was taken into custody during the investigation and arrested.

Johnson was booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges in connection with this investigation.

Police say he was also arrested and booked on an outstanding and unrelated warrant.

The Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office has filed formal criminal charges in Elkhart Circuit Court.

Johnson is charged with Auto Theft, a Level 6 Felony, False Informing, a Class A Misdemeanor, and Knowingly or Intentionally Operating a Motor Vehicle without Ever Receiving a License, a Class C Misdemeanor.

Johnson's bond was previously set at $100,000.
