ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department reports their Warrants Team, along with U.S. Marshals and the Indiana State Police, showed up to an automotive business in 59000 block of Market Street on Thursday around 12:40 p.m. looking for a suspect.

The report states the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Trenton Copeland, was wanted for five counts of Armed Robbery and Resisting Law Enforcement.

Police say while searching the business' property, they located Copeland hiding inside a wall.

An affidavit acquired by ABC57 shows Copeland's charges stem from a July 28, 2024, incident during which officers with the South Bend Police Department responded to a reported armed fight at a gas station on Logan Street.

Documents state officers arrived to find a black sedan running with no lights on which then fled the scene.

Police say they noticed the car had no license plate and attempted to make a traffic stop.

Authorities say the car failed to stop and led police on a short chase before crashing into an unoccupied car on 33rd Street.

Police say three people exited the car and ran with officers following and apprehending the driver.

The driver, identified as Makenzie Reed, was arrested and told police she saw the police lights and meant to stop but fled after being urged by her passengers. The two passengers escaped.

Officers then interviewed the group of four adults and a juvenile who reported the attempted robbery.

According to the victims, they were walking to the gas station from their house when a dark-colored vehicle pulled alongside them.

The victims told police two unknown men, who were passengers in the car, asked them what they were doing walking around at night when the conversation turned hostile.

The affidavit states that during the conversation, Reed called out a victim's name.

The victim whose name was called and the juvenile victim told police at that point they recognized Reed by her voice because they had gone to school together and had prior run-ins.

Documents state the car then drove off and the victims continued to the gas station.

Once inside the store, the two men from the car walked in. The victims told police one man pulled out and pointed a gun at them and that they saw a gun on the second man.

Documents state the man pointing the gun yelled, "Where's the money, where's the money?"

The store clerk then called the police, and the men left in the dark-colored car.

Police say security footage showed the dark sedan pull up to the front of the gas station with the two men exiting and heading into the store.

One of the men was later identified as Copeland. He was seen in the footage holding a gun in his hand, according to police.

The men are then seen entering the store to confront the victims with the previously stated events playing out according to court documents.

Police say two phones were found inside of the suspect vehicle.

The affidavit states a search warrant was completed for both phones. One phone was found to belong to Reed while the other phone located in the rear of the vehicle was linked to Copeland through phone number and email accounts.
