18-year-old arrested in Michigan City also wanted in St. Joseph County for armed robbery
La Porte County Jail: Tayden Page MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- An 18-year-old is in jail facing charges in both La Porte and St. Joseph Counties following a brief foot chase with police in Michigan City on June 6.
In La Porte County, the suspect, Tayden Page, is charged with Possession of a Machine Gun, a Level 5 Felony, Theft of Firearm, A Level 5 Felony, Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun, a Misdemeanor, and Resisting Law Enforcement, a Misdemeanor.
Page entered a not guilty plea at his initial hearing. His next hearing is on July 30.
In St. Joseph County, Page is charged with Armed Robbery, a Level 3 Felony. No court dates have been set for this case.
Page remains in La Porte County Jail at this time.
Court documents from La Porte County reveal Page was arrested after running from Michigan City police who observed him and two others in an area known for recent gun violence.
The arresting officer was with a detective in a fully marked vehicle patrolling the area of Washington Park when he noticed Page and two other individuals were walking together and appeared nervous as the police car passed them.
The report states Page and one of the other individuals were wearing hoodies while the third wore a tank top with a backpack on. Police said it was hot that day, so this led them to believe the group could be armed, concealing weapons in the hoodies. Police say the men also clutched their waistbands as they drove by the group. Police say the waistband is a common place to conceal a firearm.
The officer states he continued observing the area and witnessed the group jaywalk to a nearby convenience store, at which point the officer turned his lights and siren on.
When the officer pulled up, Page and one of the other individuals ran from him. The officer said he yelled, "Stop, police!" several times, but neither suspect listened.
The officer then pulled his gun out during the chase as he believed the two to be armed.
The officer made chase before the duo split up near a wooded area, where he kept chasing Page through a vacant lot until other officers arrived near the intersection of Ohio and Chicago Streets, where Page was cut off.
Page was taken into custody. Page declined to speak with police at that time.
A K9 then assisted in locating any illegal contraband or firearms Page may have discarded during the chase.
A black Glock 22 .40 handgun was recovered from the nearby vacant lot Page had run through. Investigators found it was equipped with a "switch," or a machine gun conversion device, which is illegal.
Police also found the gun also had a live .40 cartridge in the chamber plus 21 live .40 cartridges in the extended magazine inserted into the firearm. The gun was found to have been stolen out of Mishawaka.
Officers then found Page had an arrest warrant out of St. Joseph County for an alleged armed robbery on April 17.
St. Joseph County court documents reveal Page, along with three others, allegedly pointed guns at a man near the train tracks by the Old Foundry, before going through his pockets and stealing several items.
Page and the other three allegedly stole the victim's phone, car keys, Sony A7 II camera, and Glock 22 Gen 3 .40 caliber handgun with a 22-round magazine. The victim later found his car keys and phone which the trio dropped.
