10-year-old shooting victim's family confers with prosecutors as teen suspect remains in custody

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office announced Tuesday, a detention hearing was held for 17-year-old Jacob Olvera, identified as the suspect by the Mishawaka Police Department, in Sunday's shooting death of 10-year-old Sophia Burks.

At the hearing, Olvera was ordered to remain in custody at Thomas N. Frederick Juvenile Justice Center.

Olvera's formal arraignment has been scheduled for Feb. 18 at 2:15 p.m.

Olvera is facing charges of Criminal Recklessness, a Level 6 Felony, Dangerous Possession of a Firearm, a class A Misdemeanor, and Possession of a Machine Gun, a Level 5 Felony.

The prosecutor’s office states it will be conferring with Burks' family on next steps. 

The case remains under investigation by the Mishawaka Police Department.
